Presenter: Dr Pamela Humphreys

The global use of English as the medium of instruction (EMI) is growing in non-anglophone contexts. This is bringing about numerous challenges for practitioners who may be required to adopt it. One such challenge is positioning EMI content specialists as English language experts and teachers. This presentation will overview EMI and its increasing adoption in ASEAN, with a focus on translanguaging as a pedagogical stance that can enhance both content and English language teaching. We will explore the potential for developing an EMI professional who is able to move beyond locally imposed language policies, while supporting English language learners to become multilingual speakers in EMI contexts and worldwide.
