Congratulations to The Australian Centre for Education and Training (ACET).

The Australian Centre for Education and Training (ACET) serves as IDP Education’s English language teaching college, operating four campuses across Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. ACET is committed to providing English courses that equip students with the necessary skills for work, study, or migration.

We extend our congratulations to ACET for its successful completion of the NEAS Quality Review for 2023. This review encompassed structured meetings and Focus Group discussions involving management, students, teachers, and professional staff. Additionally, the use of anonymised Quality Principles Surveys helped identify focal points for the Quality Review process, while comprehensive stakeholder feedback was analysed in alignment with the key Principles and Drivers of the NEAS Quality Assurance Framework. For more information on the Quality Assurance Framework, please refer to this section of the NEAS website: https://neas.org.au/resources/neas-quality-framework/.

Through Focus Group interviews and online survey responses, ACET teachers highlighted that the Centres promote quality of delivery by regularly assessing students and providing frequent feedback. At the conclusion of each course, surveys are distributed to students via email. Students, in turn, expressed their gratitude for the dual-teacher approach in their program, praising instructors for their clarity in teaching and their support in skill development. It is worth noting that teachers willingly assist students with questions and extra work upon request. Within the teachers’ rooms, both digital and physical resources are readily available. Additionally, Independent Learning Centres (ILC) are actively used, offering valuable resources for both teachers and students.

Congratulations to Hello Australia for the successful completion of its 2023 Quality Review initiative!

Hello Australia, an Australian-registered education agent, is part of the Hello Study group of companies, which includes Hello Canada, Hello England, and Hello USA. Hello Australia commenced recruiting international students from its headquarters in Brisbane in 2007. Since then, it has expanded its reach, with offices in Sydney (2011), Melbourne (2016), the Gold Coast (2017), and the Sunshine Coast (2018). Hello Australia has established partnership agreements with several NEAS Member Centres. In addition to NEAS Quality Endorsement, Hello Australia is also certified by multiple Australian and international organisations.

NEAS conducted its assessment of Hello Australia’s operations and services using Area J of the NEAS Quality Assurance Framework, focussing on these important Quality Principles: the presence of an ethical framework underpinning the practices of the agency and its counsellors; provision of information to stakeholders that is ethical, accurate and consistent; use of governance structures that are effective and transparent; supporting a performance and development culture for staff; implementing systematic risk management processes; and routinely obtaining stakeholder feedback to inform the continuous improvement of services. More information on Area J can be found here: https://neas.org.au/resources/neas-quality-framework/#area-j

NEAS employs a distinctive 360-degree stakeholder feedback model in its review processes. The completion of staff surveys underscores the agency’s commitment to delivering professional, high-quality services. This commitment was evident during student interviews, where the agency’s care and professionalism were highlighted. Students appreciated how the staff attentively listened to their needs. Student interviews revealed the agency’s focus on compliance with legal requirements and related processes. Students described the staff as empathetic and understanding, highlighting their ability to comprehend the needs and concerns of students.

We congratulate The English Language School in Sydney (ELSIS) Melbourne!

Similar to the Brisbane branch, featured in last month’s NEAS News, The English Language School in Sydney (ELSIS) Melbourne provides General English classes tailored to learners from beginner to advanced levels. The Centre also offers specialised courses for IELTS preparation. ELSIS functions as the English language teaching arm of the Education Centre of Australia (ECA) Group, a prominent provider of top-tier education and training services. Alongside English language programs, ECA delivers a diverse range of vocational education and higher education degree programs.

ELSIS Melbourne has successfully completed the NEAS Quality Review for 2023. This comprehensive review involved structured meetings and Focus Group discussions with participation from management, students, teachers, and professional staff. In addition, the use of anonymised Quality Principles Surveys helped pinpoint key areas of focus during the Quality Review process. The extensive feedback from stakeholders was analysed in accordance with the essential Principles and Drivers outlined in the NEAS Quality Assurance Framework. For more information on the Quality Assurance Framework, please refer to this section of the NEAS website: https://neas.org.au/resources/neas-quality-framework/.

ELSIS Melbourne, with its effective marketing strategies and agent connections, is known for its commitment to being a reputable education provider. The Centre prioritises student recruitment through trusted agents and welcomes input from key stakeholders, all of which contribute to transparency and the institution’s strong reputation. Additionally, student feedback in the Focus Group meeting was positive, highlighting satisfaction with the courses, alignment with their chosen paths, and appreciation for the quality of teacher feedback and correction during classes.

The Centre offers extra classes four times a week, consistently at full capacity. These classes include One-on-One sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Conversation Class on Wednesdays, Grammar Class on Mondays, and Career Pathways seminars when applicable. These popular initiatives give students valuable opportunities to enhance language skills, engage in personal discussions, refine grammar proficiency, and explore potential career paths. The Centre also supports learning and engagement through, for example, the ELSIS Student Ambassador Program and Student of the Month recognition.

NEAS Congratulates Townsville International English School (TIES) on completing a successful Quality Review activity!

TIES is a long-established boutique English language college in the heart of the Townsville CBD, with easy access to nearby services, cafes and food outlets. Currently, TIES is the sole English language college in the Townsville CBD and maintains close relationships with James Cook University (JCU) and local VET providers. Located on the second floor, the campus provides classrooms designed as versatile learning spaces, complete with student kitchens and café-style seating – a conducive environment that fosters both structured learning and student interactions.

The Centre is currently offering General English classes to students from diverse countries including Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Italy, Japan, and Indonesia. In addition to teaching English, the Centre runs a small PTE test centre overseen by a test center manager.

Teachers in the focus group were highly complementary of the Centre’s directions to teachers and the variety of resources available. This sentiment was echoed by the students themselves, who hold the teaching approaches in high regard. Students also felt confident that their English language skills and ability to communicate in an Australian context had improved markedly since commencing study at TIES.

TIES collaborates with Study Townsville to facilitate student engagement within the local community and promote interactions among students, both local and international. The President of Study Townsville, who also holds the position of Principal Executive Officer (PEO) at TIES, possesses a comprehensive knowledge of various student-focused activities in the area. TIES adeptly identifies students’ interests, including sports, volunteer work, or religious affiliations, and assists in connecting them with suitable local clubs and organisations that align with their preferences. Some TIES students voluntarily participate in the Study Townsville Student Ambassador program. This program involves engaging in local activities and sharing their experiences with current and prospective students. Additionally, the Centre offers support to students in their search for accommodation and part-time job opportunities, contributing to a well-rounded student experience.

October 2023 NEAS Team Update

Dear Valued Quality Member,

This NEAS team update reflects on the last few months and as always, such a reflection provides us with the chance to throw a spotlight on our own practice and see what we are achieving and what’s to come before the end of 2024!

NEAS continues advocating on all things “Quality” with regulators, government, and industry bodies for independent, industry-led and specialist Quality Assurance in English Language Teaching.

The impact of NEAS’s advocacy efforts has been tangible, as evidenced by the growing traction and momentum within the industry. The influx of incoming students from overseas is on the rise, indicating a promising trajectory for the ELT sector. NEAS’s continuous support for the ELT community through advice, information dissemination, guidance, and innovation has contributed significantly to supporting our members during this positive trend.

We thank the Australian ELT sector for being our stalwart supporters and are proud to share the news that the last three months has seen 35 ELT centres, individuals and agents pass their Quality Assurance activity with flying colours. The majority were ELT centres that underwent Quality Endorsement/Review, while others conducted Self-Assessment or attended Management Meetings. Our members have shown renewed enthusiasm for the NEAS process for practice improvement and we commend them for it wholeheartedly!

Onshore collaboration and partnerships have remained at the core of the NEAS strategy. We have maintained strong collaborations with prominent Australian stakeholders such as English Australia, University English Centres Australia (UECA), and others. Government departments and authorities, including the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) and the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), have also been key stakeholders in NEAS’s pursuit of quality assurance.

NEAS CEO Dr Patrick Pheasant presented at the PIE Conference on the Gold Coast in July to promote the importance of Quality Assurance (QA) with his topic of Strengthening Bilateral relationships and in Sydney at the English Australia Conference in September on Homestay standards. Just last week we had a significant presence at The Australian International Education Conference (AIEC) where we exhibited, presented and hosted Braindates. We also took the opportunity to host  an  industry networking event to announce the new NEAS Homestay Standards Quality Area O: Homestay Service Provider. We were delighted to share this event with so many friends and colleagues from the ELT and Education sector in general. Furthermore our 2024 Professional Development Schedule is jam-packed with COP events, webinars, workshops and the conference, most of which are free, all of which are worth CPD points.

The team at NEAS regularly scrutinises the QA Framework and recognised the need for an additional area, namely Quality Area O: Homestay Service Providers. Together with extensive industry input this area is now being piloted with some early adopters. This is an exciting addition to the NEAS Framework.

Our cross-border collaboration has remained pro-active too and has been instrumental in fostering growth and innovation within the global ELT sector. We have grown our involvement with the ASEAN University Network (AUN) as well as other ventures overseas. Our Education Manager, Ms Rima Ibrahim, spoke at the GPEX summit in Malaysia and our Communications Manager, Ms Peetra Lechte, spoke at the VUS TESOL conference in Vietnam as well as at the AUN-QA conference in Thailand. Between us, we have recently visited a number of university ELT centres promoting QA activity and Australian Quality Standards for English Language Teaching in the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

The importance of NEAS’s endeavours and its commitment to fostering connections among global ELT practitioners have been recognised and endorsed by notable figures in the education sector, as evidenced by mentions in prominent publications and podcasts, such as those by Claire Fields in the Campus Morning Mail and Tim Todd in The Australian Higher Education supplement.

The NEAS team, with guidance from the NEAS Board, NEAS Advisory Council and our members, is finalising the 2023 – 2026 Strategy to take us into the next phase of our important role in the ELT sector here and overseas.

As always, we thank you for your loyalty and commitment to QA and ELT and remain at your service. Please don’t hesitate to contact any of the team directly, for any feedback or questions.

NEAS Announces First Member in Myanmar

NEAS congratulates STARFISH Education on becoming a Quality Endorsed Member, marking a significant milestone as the first NEAS Member Centre in Myanmar. Established in 2008, STARFISH Education has consistently demonstrated its commitment to enhancing the English language proficiency of Myanmar’s young learners.

Before the pandemic, STARFISH Education maintained four physical Centres in Yangon and Mandalay. These Centres were dedicated to offering English language courses and test preparation programs. In response to the challenges posed by the pandemic, STARFISH Education made a significant transition to become an online English language provider.

Currently, STARFISH Education extends its reach to students in over 190 townships across Myanmar through online classes and a self-study portal. They have a team of experienced teachers, a responsive customer service team, and IT support in place to assist students with their online educational needs. This strategic shift demonstrates STARFISH Education’s commitment to ensuring continued access to quality education for students.

During the Focus Group session, students shared their positive experiences with STARFISH Education. They highlighted that their applications to institutions like the British Council and other pathway courses had seen a significant increase in success rates after they began their studies with STARFISH Education. Furthermore, students noted a substantial improvement in their confidence when it came to productive language skills, specifically speaking and writing. Students expressed their appreciation for the Study Portal materials, underscoring how these resources had enabled them to monitor their progress electronically, offering a personalised learning experience. Additionally, students participated in group projects, requiring them to collaborate online outside of regular class hours. This approach not only nurtured their autonomy as learners but also honed their teamwork and leadership skills.

NEAS Announces Inaugural Endorsed Homestay Service Provider

The Australian Homestay Network (AHN) is a well-established provider of homestay services in Australia. AHN’s mission is to provide international students with a secure, comfortable, and culturally enriching living environment by carefully matching them with host families. With a strong emphasis on student welfare, AHN is dedicated to ensuring the wellbeing and overall positive experience of their students. They offer essential support and training to host families, equipping them to provide a nurturing and enriching environment for the students under their care.

NEAS is pleased to assess and endorse AHN as the first Australian provider in the category of Quality Products and Services (Area O – Homestay Service Providers). The Quality Principles of Area O focus on the following critical aspects of the vendor’s service: its governance and management practices; the provision of a safe and comfortable living environment for students; its support for student welfare arrangements; and the training of host families for student welfare and wellbeing. Detailed information on Area O of the NEAS Quality Assurance Framework can be referenced here: https://neas.org.au/resources/neas-quality-framework/#area-o.

NEAS was particularly impressed with AHN’s well-structured documentation provided to both students and homestay hosts. AHN uses student and host portals that encourage continuous interaction and feedback while also serving as repositories for essential documents and policies. A standout among these resources is the Homestay Placement Summary, which effectively presents crucial information to students, offering clear descriptions and showcasing photographs of the hosts and their residences.
